Wild Service leaves
|
Hanging over the fence of Little Wood, in an effort to reach the light, is a Wild Service Tree with a steeply sloping trunk. The leaves are often mistaken for Maple, but there are white flowers in May-June, and brown berries in late summer which were once taken as a cure for colic, and also used to brew a beer or possibly a liqueur. A modern version can be made by steeping the berries in whisky. Wild Service Trees are a sign of ancient woodland.
