Burgh House has one of the best public collections of art by Helen Allingham, and it will be shown in its entirety in this temporary exhibition, co-curated by artist Rea Stavropoulos. The exhibition reexamines Allingham’s work with a contemporary slant, looking past the exquisite watercolour gardens that she is widely known for, to the life of the artist herself: her marriage, her friends and the evolution of her artistic career. Sun-baked beaches in Andalucia, quiet Dorset townscapes, vibrant scrap yards in Edmonton…. Evelyn Korn paints very different locations here and abroad using oil on canvas. The geometric patterning of piled up cars in a breaker’s yard has a similar vividness and intensity as a glowing field of sun flowers in Provence, or red telephone boxes in an exotic jungle.

Venue: Fellowship House, 136A Willifield Way, NW11 6YD. The speaker, Dr Stephen Brogan Stephen, was a founder of the Early Modern Society at Birkbeck College and its president from 2006-13. He is currently a visiting lecturer at Royal Holloway University. He last spoke to us entertainingly on the subject of “Scrofula-The King’s Evil and the King’s Touch”. The present lecture is about the spy, soldier, freemason and diplomat (1728-1810) on whom the London Stock Exchange took bets as to whether he/she was a man or a woman. All lectures are followed by free refreshments. Visitors are welcome £3.00, members of Fellowship House £1.00. There is no difficulty parking.
