Kashmir Birch
The area around Lucas Square was originally planted with Silver Birch. They are easily recognised by their white trunks with black markings, and delicate drooping branches. At No:58 there is a Silver Birch; at No:56 is a Kashmir Birch which has very smooth white bark and has been used for some of the recent plantings. Birch sap is used to make beer; very young shoots and catkins can be eaten; the leaves make a tea, and are used to treat rheumatic complaints.
