Boundaries include hedges, fences, walls and gates. Originally boundaries were mainly hedged, but often supplemented by posts and chains, posts and wire or trelliswork in certain areas. However, hedges predominate. This contributes to the rural charm of the Suburb when seen together with the generous tree planting and greenswards of many roads, and contributes to a unity of composition.
Hedges are important to the overall appearance of the Suburb and should be preserved. Walls and weatherboarded or panelled fences are likely to be acceptable on property boundaries. Particular designs of gates were used in different areas. These should be reproduced where possible. Iron railings or elaborate gateways are not generally a feature of Suburb houses.
