The Hampstead Garden Suburb Horticultural Society is a voluntary organisation open to all residents and those who live nearby, with an elected Committee meeting monthly. An Annual General Meeting is held in November.
Established in 1909, we are one of the oldest horticultural societies in the UK. We hold two Flower Shows a year (June and September). The Society organises a variety of events to cater for all levels of gardening interest and horticultural expertise.
New members are always welcome, click here to discover more about the benefits of membership or to join.
We celebrated the Centenary of Hampstead Garden Suburb Horticultural Society’s foundation by Dame Henrietta Barnett and early residents of the Suburb in 2009 with many special commemorative events.
The latest version of our Newsletter (January 2010) is available here (pdf file format - click here to download a pdf reader, free, for your computer).
At the beginning of 2007, the Society received a lottery grant from Awards for All (England) to create a commemorative flower bed on Willifield Green to mark the centenary of Hampstead Garden Suburb. The project also received donations from residents and members and Finchley Nurseries provided two tubs of plants and flowers. It was unveiled on Wednesday 2nd May by Society Hon Presidents Jonathan Ross and Jane Goldman. This flowerbed was completely re-designed by Stephen Crisp for the Society’s own Centenary in 2009. At the end of 2009, after three years of successful but expensive and labour-intensive life, it was cleared and levelled, and the ground reverted to the London Borough of Barnet.
HGS Horticultural Society was founded on 20 May 1909. Again designed by Stephen Crisp, a new community flowerbed to commemorate this anniversary was created on the opposite side of the road in Willifield Way (near Fellowship House). A new tree to match others alongside was planted and the flowerbed was opened officially on 18 July 2009 by Henry Kelly.
Awards: The Society won several awards for the raised commemorative flowerbed on Willifield Green: 2007 - Bronze Medal from the London Gardens Society; third Place in the Barnet in Bloom Competition, Certificate of Excellence from London in Bloom; 2008 - Silver Medal from the London Gardens Society; third prize in the Barnet in Bloom Competition; 2009 - First prize and a silver cup in Barnet in Bloom (public garden not supported by the borough category); Certificate of Excellence from the London Gardens Society and London in Bloom.
