Coach Trip to Welford Park for the Snowdrops

  • Sunday 21 February
A country house and estate near Newbury noted for a spectacular display of snowdrops. The tea rooms serve light lunches and there is also an opportunity to buy snowdrops 'in the green'. Gardeners' Question Time

HGS Horticultural Society's very popular opportunity for you to get answers to your gardening questions from Philip and friends from Finchley Nurseries and the Horticultural Society's own expert, James Robbins, formerly of Gardening Which? at Capel Manor. Free to members; non-members £3.00 at the door. Incidentally, don't forget that the Horticultural Society also runs a members' 'Buddy Scheme', if you need advice or suggestions for your garden (details on the membership page of the Hort Soc website).

'Gardening for Wildlife', a Talk by Anne Luder

A talk on growing plants and laying out your garden for the benefit of wildlife by Anne Luder, who was a lecturer at Capel Manor, is a garden designer and offers a wide variety of gardening talks. Free for members; non-members £3.00 at the door.

Coach Trip to Wickham Place Farm and Ulting Wick, Essex

  • Wednesday 11 May
Wickham Place Farm is a large garden dating back to 1706, including a walled garden, a knot garden, folly, pond and woodland, with a huge wisteria, roses, climbers, perennials and bulbs. Ulting Wick was created in 2004 from an old working farmyard and is now full of colour, including thousands of tulips in box parterre beds. Details and to book: 0208 455 0455/7334. Plant Sale

Your chance to snap up bargains at HGS Horticultural Society's popular annual sale of discounted and high-quality Summer bedding plants and annuals, vegetable, herb and tomato seedlings and some locally-grown perennials for your garden. Entry free. Cash and cheques only. Bring your own bags if possible.

Summer Flower Show ENTRY NIGHT

  • Tuesday 7 June from 7pm to 8pm

Bring your entry forms for Saturday's June Flower Show (in the members' handbook) to Fellowship House, or send them to 4 Asmuns Hill, NW11 6ET on or before 7 June. The show organiser and members of the committee are on hand with advice if you need it (020 8455 8741). Calling everyone who has never entered for a show before: to encourage members who have never plucked up courage to do so, we have included some classes for 'First Timers' at both shows in 2016. Only members WHO HAVE NEVER COMPETED BEFORE are eligible. You may, of course, enter any other classes in the show too! To celebrate the 90th birthday of HM The Queen, there will be a royal theme running through both the adult and Junior classes and the fancy dress competitions (see the members' handbook for details).

281st Flower Show, and Fancy Dress Competitions on a royal theme for Juniors and Adults

HGS Horticultural Society's traditional Summer show, bringing the sights and scents of the country to the town. Locally-grown flowers, fruit and veg. on show, together with displays of cooking, baking, photography and much more. To commemorate HM The Queen's 90th birthday, there is a royal theme running through many of the exhibits. Home-made teas, preserves table in aid of the North London Hospice (tbc). Enter yourself or admire the courage and exhibits of people competing for the very first time in a new 'First Timers' section. Perhaps you will be next and enter for the show in September! Entry free for members and under-18s; £2.00 for non-members. Also FANCY DRESS PARADE AND COMPETITION FOR CHILDREN AGED 0-16 YEARS: 'Royalty'. Dress up as a king, queen, prince or princess and come to the Free Church Hall garden to parade at 3.30pm (indoors if wet). To be judged at 3.30 by the new Mayor of Barnet, Cllr David Longstaff, who will also open the show. Prizes for all! AND FOR THE ADULTS (17+) MAD HATS COMPETITION: Design and wear a hat fit for a queen (to be judged after the fancy dress). Entry for both competitions is free (www.hortsoc.co.uk). Competition followed at 4pm by traditional PUNCH AND JUDY SHOW. Members' Gardens open for National Gardens Scheme Charities

'Suburb in Bloom' Garden Competition closing date for entries

The Suburb has so many beautiful gardens and the Horticultural Society would love to have many more entries from residents in its 'Suburb in Bloom' garden competition. Why not enter yours? The winner will receive a £25 plant voucher and hold the Millennium Cup for a year. Second and third prizes of £15 and £10 garden vouchers. Judging will take place on Wednesday 22 June. Three-day visit to The Gardens of Somerset

A three-day trip for Horticultural Society members and friends setting off from the Suburb by coach and visiting a wonderful selection of gardens en route and in Somerset. HGS Horticultural Society's traditional Autumn show, bringing the sights and scents of the country to the town. Locally-grown flowers, fruit and veg. on show, together with displays of cooking, baking, photography and much more. Home-made teas, preserves table in aid of the North London Hospice (tbc) and large variety of colourful spring bulbs on sale. Admire the courage and exhibits of people competing for the very first time in a new 'First Timers' section. GRIMSDYKE BRASS band will play in the garden throughout the afternoon (indoors if wet). Entry free for members and under-18s; £2.00 for non-members.

Putting your garden to bed - jobs for the Autumn - A talk by Denis of Sunshine Nurseries

102nd Annual General Meeting and Presentation of Prizes

Chairman's Report on the past year's events, Treasurer's Report on the Accounts, Election and Re-Election of the Committee for 2016-17, new programme for 2017 and Presentation of Medals, Cups and Prizes to the 2016 show winners. Come and collect your own show prize-money. Refreshments. Celebrate our Society - members' seasonal party
