at St. Jude's Church .
7.45pm An American Dream.
Fenella Humphrys (violin), Deborah Calland (trumpet), Kyle Horch (sax),
and Iain Farrington (piano), with Robert Winslade Anderson (bass).
Music of the old and new Americas, including Copland’s Old American
Songs, Piazzolla tangos, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and Dizzy Gillespie,
interspersed with poems by Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes.
Formed in 2008 to give the first performance of "On the Edge" by Edward
Rushton, Counterpoise comprises some of the most sought-after
instrumentalists in the UK, with the unconventional line-up of violin,
trumpet, saxophone and piano enabling composers to experiment with
challenging fusions of music, text and visuals.
The group has appeared at the City of London, Cheltenham, Buxton and
Newbury Festivals, as well as other significant venues up and down the
country.
The players are joined tonight by bassist Robert Winslade Anderson a
former ABRSM international Scholar at the Royal Academy of Music,
who has since enjoyed much success in appearances with many of the
UK’s major opera companies, such as Scottish Opera, English National
Opera, Glyndebourne and Birmingham Opera Company.
‘… delivered by Counterpoise with aplomb’ The Times;
‘… weird and wonderful’ The Independent.
Supported by Godfrey & Barr.
