LJCC - Ivy House Music and Dance Markova 2014

  • Sunday 26 October 2014 at 3:30pm
at Ivy House .
£30
Join us to celebrate the Child Pavlova, Alice Marks, who as Alicia Markova became the first great British ballerina. Her life and work spanned the twentieth century: from Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes, through the early days of Rambert and the Vic-Wells Company to the founding of London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet).

In acknowledgement of the tenth anniversary of her death, Ivy House Music & Dance brings together an extraordinary assembly of experts and performers to explore Markova’s artistry and her legacy:

• Jane Pritchard, Victoria and Albert Museum Curator of Dance, will introduce footage of Markova in performance.

• Dame Beryl Grey, Clement Crisp, John Auld, Katherine Wade and Alain Dubreuil will share memories of Markova the dancer and the person with Chair, Gerald Dowler.

• The afternoon will conclude with solos from three of Markova’s greatest roles:
Façade, Polka, danced by Lauretta Summerscales (English National Ballet)
Les Sylphides, danced by Alison McWhinney (English National Ballet)
Nutcracker, Sugar Plum Fairy, danced Laura Morera (Principal, The Royal Ballet)

Markova was far above and apart from the rest of us. She was a star.
Dame Margot Fonteyn.
